Hugh McLeod came to Langley from Nebraska in 1902. He was the first of four brothers who came to Langley in the early years of the 20th Century. Hugh built a small building on Anthes Avenue that served as his law office and residence. A town pump was later built adjacent to his residence that became a favorite meeting place for members of the community, as well as their horses.

Hugh became very active in Langley affairs. He served as Justice of the Peace for many years. Young John McLeod remembers: "I'd hide underneath the table and listen to him settle the court decisions and they'd say: 'Well, I don't have any money, but I got a couple of chickens for ya.' So uncle Hugh would take the chickens and put them back on his stove and cook them - boil them, and that'd be his food for the week."
He also sold real estate and insurance, and served as an early banker. He was the first secretary of the Whidby Telephone Company, and rented a small building next to his office to serve as the telephone office in1908.
A life long bachelor, Hugh McLeod died in 1929 and his office was subsequently dismantled.

In 1983, Gordon Shoudy and sons, Michael and Scott, constructed a building on the former McLeod property in 30 days to serve as a dental office and residence for Frank Ploof.
